Then you probably know that linking from page to page affects your site’s search performance.
But given the average site’s poor internal linking, you—or someone you know—could probably use a refresher.
So here’s one of the simplest, most effective and most neglected things you can do:
Link your keywords
Okay, for those who need them, some basics.
Search engines learn about pages and sites in part through links.
Links pointing to One Degree reading "internet marketing blog," for example, help drive traffic from related searches here.
Well, links from one page of your site to another have a similar effect.
They help search engines discover pages and categorize them by keyword.
So why do so many sites poorly exploit internal keyword linking?
Make it meaningful
The key is to work keyword links into sentences in a normal, natural way.
And to make them meaningful both to readers and search engines.
Compare, for example, these three sentences:
- "Are you searching for the latest web writing tips? Then click here."
- "Are you searching for the latests tips about web writing?"
- "Are you searching for the latest web writing tips?"
Not only is the third more scannable, allowing someone to easily find what they seek.
It’s also more searchable, telling search engines what follows the link.
Simple, effective.
And commonly overlooked.
