Live 8.. A Marketing Opportunity?

Live 8, the “20 years later” version of the original Live Aid concerts in 1985, is set for this Saturday, July 2. I have four tickets and I am looking forward to the Barrie (Toronto) event. I know that the aim of this event is to focus awareness, and action, on global poverty and the upcoming G8 Summit in Scotland. Make Poverty History – do you remember seeing any of those TV commercials with actors and musicians snapping their fingers to signify how often somoeone in tne world dies due to poverty? – is getting lots of attention and co-branding with the Canadian event. Lots of companies are supporting Live 8 but why aren’t more of them using this as a better marketing tool…or to capture permission?

Spyware's reach…and the effect on marketers

In the summer issue of IT Business Report I recently read some interesting stats about malware such as spyware and adware. Forrester Research reports that 17% of enterprises it surveyed say their systems are infected with spyware! However, only 60% of those infected really knew if they were infected or not.
And what’s worse, eTrust security management says that 40% of calls to help desks are related to spyware!

Permission: Use it or lose it!

Recently I was contacted by a reputable company in the financial industry that had many email addresses of customers and prospects but had never used them. In this case, some email addresses were collected, with permission, over a span of two to five years!
The good news is that they captured permission when collecting the email addresses. The bad news? Since these addresses were never used or validated, and some are as old as five years, there is the likelihood that many of these email addresses might not be valid anymore.
